Frequently Asked Questions

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy helps to restore, maintain, and make the most of a patient's mobility, function, and well-being. At Health for Keeps different treatment methods can be used. Each person is individually assessed. Client and physiotherapist work collaboratively to determine the treatment plan that best suits each person. Treatments may include:

  • Advice and education about the condition

  • Hands-on therapies

  • Therapeutic exercise

  • Mindful movement and;

  • Breathing control.

What should I wear to Physiotherapy?

As assessment of your condition and treatment involves movement, wear something comfortable and easy to move in. Clothing may need to be moved aside to see the body area in question, however, this is only with your consent and maintaining your control and dignity at all times. This means, if you don't want to move your clothing, you don't have to.

How do I pay?

Fees for privately funded physiotherapy are payable on the day of treatment. Card payments are preferred. If you are an NDIS client, you will need to pay on the day if you are self-managed, or if you are plan-managed, Health for Keeps will directly invoice your Plan Manager. Clients are currently bulk-billed for Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), Medicare and Return to Work (Work Cover) claims. From July 2023, a gap charge of $5 per session will be payable by Medicare clients.

Can I use my Private Health Insurance?

If you have Private Health Insurance with cover for Physiotherapy, then bring your card to claim your rebate on the day using HICAPS and pay the gap with your debit or credit card. Alternatively pay with your card in full, and reclaim the rebate directly from your health insurer.

Will it hurt?

When you have a painful condition, sometimes there is some discomfort, soreness or pain during or after the assessment or treatment process. This will be fully explained. All attempts will be made to manage your pain appropriately during your session. You will be asked for your consent (agreement) to undertake the assessment or treatment. If you have pain afterwards you will be given advice on how best to manage it. If you are worried about pain during or after your session, please let us know. Health for Keeps strives to make your visit as calm and comfortable as possible.

How long does Physiotherapy take?

The initial assessment usually takes around 50 minutes to complete (sometimes a little longer for more complex problems) and follow up sessions take 25 minutes. Treatment of your problem can take some time, depending on the condition. So, it is likely that you will need to return for a number of sessions. It is rare that something is resolved in one session. This will be explained to you during your first assessment to help you to manage your condition and make the treatment program as effective and efficient as possible. This means that you will be given "homework" to do in between sessions to make the most of your time when you are at Health for Keeps and to progress your results at home.

Do I need to wear a mask?

Although mask mandates have been relaxed, I still frequently wear a mask in clinic as it is nearly impossible to social distance during assessment and treatment.

Can I come if I've had Covid?

Yes, but you are requested to delay your appointment until at least 5 days after you first were diagnosed with Covid and are symptom free (no cough, sneezing etc.). This is because healthcare settings (Physiotherapy) are designated as high risk. We are unable to maintain social distancing during treatment. However, Health for Keeps does offer telehealth appointments if needed. These are effective and safe if you are unwell and many conditions can be appropriately managed via teleheath consultations. Please ask for more details.
